INFORMATION FOR THE PROTEGE

Benefits of being a Protege

Gain a Different Point of View.  Proteges will gain the valuable benefit of having another set of eyes and ears to interpret and identify areas of professional challenge and potential career importance.

Enhance Upward Mobility.  Proteges will learn what it takes to make successful career choices.  Mentors could help them in critical career choices and long-term development.

Gain Experience Vicariously.  Proteges will have the opportunity to learn from the mistakes and successes of mentors and be able to apply these lessons to their own career.

Set Goals.  Proteges may learn the skills and value of effective goal-setting techniques.  With the assistance and support of a mentor, he/she may establish and achieve meaningful and challenging goals.

Network. Proteges will have an important networking opportunity with mentors who may be able to introduce them to new contact, professional organizations and societies.  Contact with an experienced mentor may be especially helpful during periods of organizational transitions or changing programmatic focus.

Get the Big Picture.  A continuing relationship with an experienced mentor can help proteges maintain a bigger picture and a broader overall perspective.  Proteges may be exposed to various functions within OPDIVs and see how their efforts are related to other programs and the OPDIV’s mission.  The big picture will help prepare proteges for their next career move.
